Hampton Court Palace – Where History Comes Alive (and the Kids Actually Enjoy It!)

👑 A family favourite that keeps growing with us.
Hampton Court Palace has been a regular spot for us for years. Honestly, I’ve been taking the kids there since they were all babies. Back then it was mostly about pushchair strolls through the spectacular gardens and grabbing a cup of tea between nappy changes. Now? It’s turned into one of our favourite family days out, and we still discover something new every time we visit.

What I love most is how Hampton Court mixes rich history and art with genuinely fun experiences. You’re wandering through Tudor halls one minute, marvelling at centuries-old art work, and then suddenly you’re dodging a costumed Henry VIII in the courtyard while the kids chase each other around pretending they’re royal spies. It’s educational, yes, but in a way that feels alive and not forced, or overly “school trip.”
🎭 Events We’ve Loved
One of our favourite experiences at Hampton Court Palace was being able to watch Horrible Histories Live in the gardens. It was absolutely brilliant for the kids (and I loved it too!) It’s hilarious, a little gross (in the best way), and such a clever way to bring history to life. The actors are full of energy, and even the grown-ups leave with random Tudor trivia stored in their heads forever.
And don’t even get me started on the Summer Food Festival. The atmosphere is buzzing, the smells are mouth-watering, and the food stalls are packed with everything from artisan pastries to spicy street food. I always end up buying something I didn’t plan to, but it’s usually worth it.
🎨 Art Meets History
As much as we go for the outdoor fun and family-friendly events, I love how much art is woven through the Palace experience. The tapestries, the painted ceilings, the portraits, it’s like walking through a living museum. And for kids, it’s so visual that they engage with it naturally (even if it’s just to say “That man has a weird hat, Mum”).
There’s something special about standing in a grand hall with your children and realising people stood in that same spot hundreds of years ago. You feel it. That mix of timeless beauty, powerful storytelling, and the occasional ice cream meltdown! That’s what makes Hampton Court Palace a core memory kind of place for us.

🐉 The Magic Garden – Kid Heaven
Our absolute highlight? The Magic Garden Adventure Playground, and yes, the kids dream about it. Open daily from 10 am to 6 pm during the summer holidays (with last entry at 5:15 pm), this enormous themed playground is a full-blown riot of fun. Think dragons, secret hideouts, tunnels, water pumps, fountains, sand, slides, and castle-style towers straight out of a storybook. It’s wild, imaginative, and honestly one of the best play spaces we’ve ever been to. The kids go full-on medieval while I get to sit nearby, half watching, half chilling with a lovely cup of coffee from the kiosk, preferably with a snack and my sanity intact. Absolute family gold.

One of the loveliest ways to reach Hampton Court, and truly bring the whole day to life is by taking a boat ride from Kingston or Richmond upon Thames. Gliding along the River Thames, you pass weeping willows, grand homes, and wildlife that make it feel like you’re in your own period drama (minus the corset). It’s peaceful, scenic, and the perfect way to slow down and get into the spirit of the day. For the kids, it feels like an adventure; for us grown-ups, it’s a moment of calm before the royal chaos. It honestly makes the entire outing feel more magical and memorable, a proper “journey” rather than just a destination.
