Why Football Isn’t Just a Game in Our House – It’s a Lifestyle (and Occasionally, a Battlefield)

Why Football Isn’t Just a Game in Our House – It’s a Lifestyle (and Occasionally, a Battlefield)
⚽🧃 Also featuring: lost shin pads, muddy boots, and emotional sideline snacks.
Let’s be honest: I never expected my weekends to revolve around touchline drama, dodgy goals, and shouting “Have you got your water bottle?”
But here we are. Football has taken over our family life and weirdly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The way it keeps my boys active, focused, setting goals and absolutely happy.
⚽ The Build-Up:
It starts on Sunday’s…
The kits go in the wash (hopefully), the boots get thrown in a hallway somewhere, or left outside at the side of the house.
By Friday night, the fridge is full of water’s and I’m mentally preparing for a 9am kick-off, praying it’s not in a field that may or may not be a swamp.
👟 Match Day Madness:
Game day is always chaos! Especially if I have both boys playing a game on the same day.
One boot’s missing. The other’s full of mud from last week. One of both of the boy’s can’t find their shin-pads! Each blaming the other.
The eldest child who begged to play football suddenly has zero motivation to get up out of bed and dressed, “Just five more minutes.”
Meanwhile, I’m in full sideline mum mode! Finding a hat that matches my coat (you know it loves to rain whenever there’s a football game!), flask of tea or coffee, – and sometimes both depending on how long our football day is going to be! Clutched to me like a lifeline.
🧃 More Than Just a Game:
But somewhere between the muddy socks and the missed goals, something special happens.
They learn grit.
They learn teamwork.
They get knocked down and almost always!! Both of these boy’s get straight back up. Sometimes with tears, sometimes with injuries. They still get up and want to go again!
And when they score? Wow! The pure joy. The pride. The running-around-like-Ronaldo moment?
Unmatched.
Their confidence instantly boosted!
And yeah it can also very much end in sulking and tears, if their teams don’t win.
But all of it matters.

🙃 And Let’s Not Forget:
-
The lost water bottles (we own 76 and can’t find one on match day!)
-
The muddy car driving home
-
And the absolute meltdown if the kit goes missing! (Especially the sin pads!)
💬 Final Whistle
Football isn’t just a game for our kids, it’s a whole chapter of their childhood.
One with scraped knees, big dreams, and those proud grins when they finally nail that pass.
And for us mums?
It’s cold, loud, messy… and totally unforgettable.
So here’s to football mums everywhere:
We bring the boots, the snacks, the tea, the emotional support… and sometimes, the halftime Haribo.

See you on the side lines.
Love,
Hannah x
