In recent years, there has been a concerning trend of individuals with body dysmorphia and mental health issues finding employment in fields related to mental health care, particularly in roles involving children or vulnerable adults. This poses a significant risk to those seeking help and treatment, as well as to the integrity of the mental health profession as a whole. In this blog post, we will explore why this phenomenon is so dangerous and why more needs to be done to address it.

Body dysmorphia, a condition characterised by obsessive preoccupation with perceived flaws in physical appearance, can significantly impair an individual’s ability to function in daily life. When combined with mental health issues such as depression or anxiety, the consequences can be devastating. Yet, shockingly, individuals grappling with these issues are finding themselves in positions where they are responsible for the well-being and care of others.

One of the most concerning aspects of this trend is the potential for individuals with body dysmorphia to project their own distorted perceptions onto their clients or patients. Imagine seeking guidance and support for your mental health struggles, only to be met with advice from someone whose own perception of reality is skewed by their own body image issues. This not only undermines the effectiveness of treatment but can also exacerbate existing mental health problems in vulnerable individuals.

Troy’s Lego House

The Beginning of a New Year’s Eve Tradition:

For Troy, New Year’s Eve held a special allure – a time when the air was filled with excitement and the promise of new beginnings and Lego! The Lego tradition started when Troy was around four years old and almost everyone in his family had bought him some forms of Lego for his Christmas. Determined to make the most of the festivities, Troy and I had decided to kickstart a new tradition: building a Lego set to welcome the arrival of the new year. We usually did this whilst watching films in the background, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a classic favourite, along with Transformers, albeit we had a huge selection of films.

In the early years, I must admit, it was mainly me building the Lego sets and Troy helping. Usually playing with the Lego figures and passing me the pieces. As he grew slightly older he became a real Lego king! His creativity and imagination for Lego was amazing.

With Troy’s favourite Lego sets spread out before him and a gleam of determination in his eyes, Troy eagerly embarked on many Lego mission’s. Just before his little sister was born, I challenged him to design and build a big Lego house all on his own. He was six years old at the time.

The Lego house begun to take shape: As the night wore on and the world outside erupted into a cacophony of cheers and laughter, Troy remained immersed in his Lego masterpiece. With each carefully placed brick, he brought his vision to life, constructing walls, windows, and doors with precision and skill beyond his years. His fingers flew across the colourful bricks, weaving together a tapestry of imagination and creativity.

A Labour of Love: As Troy worked tirelessly on his Lego house, his excitement bubbled over, infecting those around him with a sense of wonder and joy. I watched with pride as my son’s creation took shape, marvelling at his ingenuity and dedication. Together, we shared in the magic of the moment, creating memories that would last a lifetime. We often talk about the Lego creations he has made over the years, this Lego house is one of them.

Welcoming the New Year: As the final minutes of the old year ticked away, Troy put the finishing touches on his Lego house, stepping back to admire his handiwork with a sense of satisfaction. As the clock struck midnight and the world erupted into a chorus of cheers and celebration, Troy stood proudly beside his creation, ready to welcome the new year with open arms. Knowing that this was the year that he was going to be blessed with a baby sister.

He had taken my challenge, accepted it, designed his own Lego house and built it all on his own. It took him a good few hours. He stopped and had many party snacks and drinks. With each stop, he would stand back, ask for my opinion and consider making changes on the Lego construction. He took this challenge extremely serious.

A Timeless Tradition: For Troy, building his first epic Lego house on New Year’s Eve wasn’t just about creating a structure out of plastic bricks – it was about embracing the joy of creativity, fostering imagination, and celebrating the magic of childhood. As the years passed and Troy grew older, the tradition of building a Lego on New Year’s Eve became a cherished custom, a testament to the enduring power of imagination and the beauty of simple pleasures.

In a world filled with hustle and bustle, game consoles and devices, Troy’s New Year’s Eve – Lego adventure serves as a reminder to slow down, embrace the moment, and find joy in the simple things. As we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, let us remember the magic of childhood wonder, the joy of creativity, and the beauty of building memories that last a lifetime.

Over the years, Troy has shared his love, passion and skills for Lego with his younger siblings. I always remind him…. “You’re never too old for Lego, and you’re never too old for creativity.”

When Life Hands You Lemons: Embracing Challenges and Finding Sweetness in Adversity

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and sometimes, it can feel like we’re handed a basket of lemons when all we wanted was a smooth ride. This applies for everyone, I don’t believe anyone has a perfect life. However, it’s often said that when life hands you lemons, you should make lemonade. In other words, it’s about finding the sweetness in adversity and turning challenges into opportunities for personal growth and this were you build resilience and find inner strength. Join me as we explore the art of making lemonade, or in my own unique creative twist…Limoncello out of life’s lemons and discover how embracing obstacles can lead to unexpected blessings.

Embracing Resilience

When faced with adversity, resilience becomes our greatest asset. Rather than succumbing to despair or frustration, resilient individuals harness their inner strength to persevere in the face of challenges. Embracing resilience means acknowledging that setbacks are a natural part of life’s journey and recognising our ability to overcome them. Whether it’s a career setback, a personal loss, or a health challenge, cultivating resilience empowers us to bounce back stronger than ever and emerge from difficult times with newfound wisdom and strength.

While it’s easy to feel discouraged when life throws us curveballs, adversity often presents unexpected opportunities for growth and transformation. Instead of viewing challenges as insurmountable obstacles, see them as chances to learn, adapt, evolve and for creative opportunities. Perhaps a job loss leads to a career change that aligns more closely with your passions and values. Or maybe a failed relationship paves the way for self-discovery and personal growth. By reframing setbacks as opportunities for positive change, we can harness the transformative power of adversity and emerge stronger, wiser, and more resilient than before.

In the midst of life’s challenges, cultivating an attitude of gratitude can be a powerful antidote to negativity and despair. Even in the darkest of times, there is always something to be thankful for – whether it’s the support of loved ones, moments of unexpected kindness, or the lessons learned through adversity. By focusing on the blessings in our lives, we shift our perspective from one of scarcity to one of abundance, allowing us to find joy and fulfilment even in the face of hardship. Being grateful for even the smallest of things, that you might have previously taken for granted.

When life hands us lemons, it’s important to remember to be kind to ourselves. Rather than berating ourselves for perceived failures or shortcomings, practice self-compassion and treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend facing a similar challenge. Acknowledge your humanity, celebrate your resilience, and give yourself permission to feel and process your emotions without judgment. By nurturing self-compassion, we cultivate inner resilience and strength, enabling us to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace and compassion. Remember it is important to take some time for yourself, even it is a relaxing hot bath.

Jelly Fish

The Jelly Fish stuck in the stand
I don’t think it enjoys being on the land,

The Jelly Fish yearns to be back in the sea,
Where it can swim, float, live and be free.

Instead it’s laying here hopeless right in front of me.

Scared to touch it, for fear I’ll be stung,
I’m wondering how this young Jelly Fish’s Journey even begun.

Did it sign up for a group excursion?
Or was it a family argument that led to their own diversion?

Dark blue in colour,
Much like St. Ives blue sea where it had become to be,
Drifted in and certainly not any duller.

Did they know?
Of was they feeling a little unsure,
Before they washed up here on the sea shore.

Was this all just a big game?
Does this blue Jelly Fish even have a name?
Will this poem give it a bit of ultimate fame?

I wonder as I watch it pulsate,
If it even remembers how all of this even became?

Fruity Baked Oats

Ingredients

  • 270g Oats
  • 240ml Whole Milk
  • 200g Brown Sugar
  • 115g Butter
  • 120g Apples, Chopped
  • 75g Peaches, Chopped
  • 75g Blueberries
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt

Method

⦁ Preheat the oven to 190c/gas mark 5. Grease an 8-inch square ovenproof dish and set aside.
⦁ Place 270g of oats in a large mixing bowl.
⦁ Add in 200g of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix the ingredients together.
⦁ Crack and beat 2 eggs in a separate clean bowl.
⦁ Pour in 240ml of whole milk and 115g of butter. Whisk the ingredients together until they are well combined. Pour the mixture into the oats.
⦁ Stir in 120g of chopped apples, 75g of chopped peaches and 75g of blueberries.
⦁ Evenly pour the ingredients out into the ovenproof dish and place in the oven for 35-40 minutes.
⦁ Remove the ovenproof dish from the oven and allow the oats to cool down before cutting it up into equal squares.
⦁ Serve.

Chia seeds pudding with coconut milk and fresh berries . top view

Coconut Chia Pudding

Ingredients

  • 85g Chia Seeds
  • 400ml Coconut Milk
  • 10g Berries
  • 3 Tablespoons Honey
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • ½ Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Salt

Method

⦁ Place 85g of Chia Seeds in a large mixing bowl.
⦁ Pour 400ml of coconut milk into a separate mixing bowl and add in 3 tablespoons of honey, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Whisk the ingredients together for 2-3 minutes.
⦁ Pour the coconut milk over the chia seeds and stir well.
⦁ Cover and set the mixture aside for at least 30 minutes, to allow the chia seed to soak up the coconut milk mixture.
⦁ Stir the chia pudding before pouring it out into a bowl or a jar.
⦁ Garnish with 10g of berries.
⦁ Serve.

*Top Tip
For better results cover and keep the coconut chia pudding refrigerated overnight. You can also garnish the coconut chia pudding with a few fresh mint leaves. In addition, you can also add fruit to the bottom of the pudding such as kiwi fruit, strawberries or bananas for added taste.
