The Two Kinds of Writers (and Why We’re All a Bit Bonkers)

Let’s get one thing out of the way: writing is NOT for the faint hearted! You sit alone, talk to imaginary people, obsess over commas like your life depends on it, and casually weep into your cup of tea at 2 a.m. because a character you made up just broke your heart.
Sound familiar?
This meme sums it up:
There are two kinds of writers:
-
Those who are insane
-
Those who are good at hiding it
And I’d argue most of us are both, depending on the day, the deadline, and the number of of tea breaks within arm’s reach.
1. The Full-On Loons
These are the writers who are gloriously, unapologetically mad. They pace the kitchen mumbling dialogue. They keep a corkboard of plot points that looks like something out of a detective thriller. They feel emotions hard – the joy, the rage, and the total despair and all before lunch time. But we love them, because they remind us that passion, even chaos, creates the best art.
You’ll spot them in coffee shops whispering, “No, she wouldn’t say that,” while stabbing at their keyboard like it personally offended them. They’ve got 42 open tabs, 3 novels on the go, and a Google history that could land them on a watch list. And still, they write.
I feel like this best describes me. I’m most definitely in the full on loon category.
2. The Secret Psychos
Then there are the “put together” ones. They are the calm, cool, tidy-font-on-Microsoft-Word types. But don’t be fooled. Inside, it’s a swirling pit of plot twists, unresolved trauma, and questionable love interests. Their minds are cathedrals of chaos hidden under colour-coded Post-it notes. Their poker face? Immaculate.
They’re the ones who’ll smile politely at the PTA, then go home and write a murder scene so disturbingly detailed you wonder if you should check their freezer.
Why It Matters
Writing is emotional excavation. To tell the truth, even fictional truth – means digging deep into your weird, wonderful self and laying it all out bare for strangers to read. That takes a special kind of courage… and yes, maybe a touch of madness too!
But here’s the kicker: Madness is the Magic. 🌟
It’s the fuel. It’s the fire. It’s the reason we turn blank pages into stories, worlds, and confessions that connect us all.
So whether you’re the chaotic type or the calm-on-the-outside-carnage-on-the-inside variety… keep going.
Your madness makes the world a little more readable.
